Our friends Annie & Najeeb

My long time friend Annie and her husband Najeeb live in Germany, which is way too far away for a good friend to live! After obtaining a visa for Najeeb, they came and visited family and friends in the U.S. for three weeks over the holidays. We were excited to finally meet Najeeb and get to spend some quality time with both of them in person. We even attempted to learn a little German and Arabic! We're glad they made it back home to Germany safely and can't wait until they visit again! (And since I posted about her, Annie may finally comment on the blog!)

Ford funeral procession

Andrea and I stood on the curb near the intersection of Breton and Hall today to watch the motorcade go by on its way to the funeral at Grace Episcopal Church. Everyone was silent as the procession passed. We could see the flag-draped casket inside the hearse, and saw Betty Ford waving in appreciation from one of the cars. We were struck by how many children were lining the streets, most of whom will only later fully appreciate the significance of what they saw. It's a rare honor for our hometown to be able to witness all the ceremonies of the past couple days, but also a fitting one; I noted afterwards today that the people of Grand Rapids were the only ones who ever voted to send Ford to Washington. He served us all well. (More here)
