End of an era on State Street

Over the weekend, Marshall Field's was replaced by Macy's. Now, I don't have a problem with Macy's in general, and I could care less that the Grand Rapids store is becoming a Macy's. But I do have a problem with the flagship State Street landmark in Chicago becoming a Macy's as do many Chicagoans. Marshall Field was an important and historic figure in Chicago history. He opened the department store on State Street over a century ago. My mother shopped there as a child, and we made the trip to "State Street that great street" every Christmas season when I was a child. State Street Field's was a destination, a part of Chicago. Macy's is New York and just plain doesn't belong there.
